The Connecticut Department of Transportation is proposing to install a Flex Lane along I-84 in Danbury between Exits 3 and 7 as one of the breakout projects from the I-84 Danbury Study. The shoulder on the median side would be repurposed into a temporary travel lane during the busiest times to maintain traffic flow and keep travelers moving. The project also includes the addition of a travel lane on Route 7 in the southbound direction approaching the I-84 westbound merge at Exit 7.
By making better use of the existing I-84 footprint, the Flex Lane would create a more reliable and efficient experience for everyone.
What is a Flex Lane?
The Flex Lane is an innovative, yet proven solution to improve traffic flow and safety by repurposing the median shoulder into a temporary travel lane during the busiest times. The Flex Lane is designed to be constructed quickly and efficiently on the existing roadway, which means fewer disruptions and faster improvements to traffic flow. While used successfully in several other states including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio, this would be the first use of a Flex Lane in Connecticut.

By temporarily repurposing the inside shoulder into a travel lane, the Flex Lane would improve traffic flow and reliability, putting time back in the hands of I-84 travelers while preserving the overall efficiency and safety of I-84.
