About

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is proposing to install a Flex Lane along I-84 in Danbury between Exits 3 and 7 as one of the breakout projects from the I-84 Danbury Study. The shoulder on the median side would be repurposed into a temporary travel lane during the busiest times to maintain traffic flow and keep travelers moving. The project also includes the addition of a travel lane on Route 7 in the southbound direction approaching the I-84 westbound merge at Exit 7.

By making better use of the existing I-84 footprint, the Flex Lane would create a more reliable and efficient experience for everyone.

What is a Flex Lane?

The Flex Lane is an innovative, yet proven solution to improve traffic flow and safety by repurposing the median shoulder into a temporary travel lane during the busiest times. The Flex Lane is designed to be constructed quickly and efficiently on the existing roadway, which means fewer disruptions and faster improvements to traffic flow. While used successfully in several other states including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio, this would be the first use of a Flex Lane in Connecticut.

The Flex Lane would only be opened when I-84 is congested with slow-moving traffic. Signs over the lane would indicate when a lane is open (green arrow), closed (red X), or closing soon (yellow X).The lane would typically only be operational during weekday morning and afternoon rush hours in the direction where traffic is heaviest. Keeping the Flex Lane closed during the less busy times would provide a wider shoulder for other critical functions, such as maintenance, emergency response, or vehicle breakdowns.

By temporarily repurposing the inside shoulder into a travel lane, the Flex Lane would improve traffic flow and reliability, putting time back in the hands of I-84 travelers while preserving the overall efficiency and safety of I-84.

Who Would Benefit from a Flex Lane on I-84?

I-84 Travelers: The Flex Lane would reduce the potential for bottlenecks and sudden slowdowns that can lead to crashes by improving how all vehicles flow through the corridor. While trucks would be prohibited in the Flex Lane, opening the Flex Lane only during the busiest times would allow all drivers to use the general-purpose travel lanes more reliably, when they need it most.

Neighboring Communities: The Flex Lane would improve traffic flow on I-84, encouraging drivers who usually detour on local roads to stay on the interstate. This helps make the highway and nearby streets better for everyone, including drivers and people walking, biking, and riding transit. Improving traffic flow on I-84 would also result in fewer emissions, improving air quality for communities along the corridor.

Businesses: The Flex Lane would support businesses by providing a more reliable route while reducing travel time and related costs.
